Safety/OC Mechanics
All our games use the same Safety and Out-of-Character Mechanics, though the terms we use may be slightly different to what you’re used to from other games. We’ve tried to choose clear, informative words and actions that won’t accidentally be used In Character.
We’re always open to feedback, and will update our safety mechanics accordingly.
Time In/Out/Freeze
“Time In”/“Time Out” are used by referees at the start and end of the event to denote when the game is starting and ending, and to resume the game after a pause.
During events, we often operate a “soft Time In/Out” once the game has begun. We won’t announce “Time In” in the mornings or “Time Out” at night; these times are already announced on the event page. You’re welcome to begin roleplaying earlier in the morning, and continue later in the night, but must avoid any significant actions; we class this as using skills or impacting game plot. Be aware that many other participants will not be roleplaying outside of the normal Time In period and should not be made to feel unwelcome from socialising in the main game areas, nor should they miss out on the chance to impact important decisions.
“Time Freeze” is used to pause the game for plot reasons. Everyone must close their eyes (where safe to do so) and remain quiet for referee instructions or resumption of play. The game will resume when a referee calls “Time In”.
Safety Stops
“Safety!”
For any real injury or safety concern that requires the game to be immediately halted. Everyone in the area who is unaffected by the issue must make a path for referees and first aiders to reach the injured person. The game will resume when a referee calls “Time In”.
“Pause!”
If a fragile item (such as glasses) is dropped during combat, use this call to pause the local scene. Once resolved, those involved should check everyone is ready to continue before resuming the game. If anyone approaches during this time, call “Pause” again.
Disengagement
“Cut!”
If you are uncomfortable during any roleplay or conversation, use this call to halt the interaction and address the issue. If you are touching someone who says “Cut”, you must immediately step away.
This call is sometimes accompanied by both hands making a “T” symbol.
“Not In Game” Signals
Fist Above Head
Anyone with their fist in the air is not currently present in-game and must be ignored. Players should use this signal after their character dies and their body is no longer required.
Head Down, Shielding Eyes
If a player needs to disengage and immediately leave play for OC reasons, they may use this gesture to do so without being stopped. Tilt your head down and put one hand on your brow as if shielding your eyes from the sun.
